“ The Policlinico di Bari is the first public health facility in Italy with an ultra-fast internet connection”, communicates the President of the Puglia Region, Michele Emiliano . The tests have been completed and the broadband network, created as part of the Sanità Connessa project financed by the PNRR, is already operational. This great result was achieved thanks to the precious synergy between Infratel Italia SpA, the Puglia Region , the regional in-house company InnovaPuglia SpA , the Policlinico di Bari and Vodafone. The activation of the ultra-fast networks at the Policlinico di Bari and at the Giovanni XXIII pediatric hospital are part of the works envisaged in Lot 6 of the Connected Health Plan, one of the five operational plans of Investment 3.1 “Ultra-fast networks and 5G” of the PNRR, managed by Infratel Italia on the basis of the operating agreement with the Department for digital transformation and awarded to Vodafone Italia.
The objective of the Connected Health Plan is to provide ultra-broadband connectivity services to public health service structures throughout the country, with a speed of between one and ten gigabits per second (Gbit/s) based on the type of connected structures, from outpatient clinics to large hospital centres. The Plan is divided into eight Lots and envisages a total investment of around 315 million euros. In addition to the activation of the ultra-fast networks, the health structures affected by the interventions will be able to enjoy, for at least five years, free access to the network with guaranteed minimum bandwidth and continuous technical assistance services.
Having concluded first the infrastructural activities necessary for the Polyclinic of Bari, the Puglia Region and InnovaPugliahave played a fundamental pioneering role for the “Connected Health” Plan thus confirming the exceptional commitment they have been carrying out for years in promoting innovation and the adoption of digital technologies in healthcare with the implementation of advanced solutions, such as telemedicine, electronic management systems for medical records and the safe and efficient exchange of information between the various healthcare facilities, offering a tangible service in favor of the well-being of citizens and more generally of public health. We are now looking ahead to the completion of ultra-fast connectivity in over 500 Apulian healthcare facilities, including outpatient clinics, hospitals and general management, taking advantage of the experience and know-how acquired during this initial phase. “The achievement of this result, the first for the Connected Health Project, once again attests the commitment that Puglia is lavishing for the implementation of the PNRR, confirming that when the synergy between the institutions works, the results are visible and tangible. The project is particularly strategic for the entire regional system as it constitutes a decisive factor for the innovation of the connectivity system of healthcare companies in terms of: efficiency, reduction of organizational costs of services, better quality of services to citizens “, speaks the President of the Region, Michele Emiliano .
“What we achieved in Puglia first in Italy is a great result – declares Councilor Rocco Palese – a result made possible by the great teamwork of the Health Department structures, together with Innovapuglia, at the AOU Policlinico of Bari to ensure connectivity to our health structures with symmetrical speeds, of at least 1 Gbps and up to 10 Gbps. It seemed impossible if you think that the operational project started in September 2022, less than a year later the network of a strategic company was strengthened throughout the south. For this I also applaud the work of the supplier entrusted with the Puglia lot”. The Director of the Health Department, Vito Montanaro,in thanking Infratel Italia, the company that coordinates the national project at a national level, for the effective collaboration, he says “Thanks to these interventions we will guarantee ultra-broadband connectivity to all health facilities, hospitals and clinics throughout the Region. We have just connected the AOU Policlinico, the project will continue during 2023 for ASL FG, ASL BR, ASL LE to follow all the others under the close coordination of the Region”.
” The network created with the Connected Health Plan – claims the General Manager of Innovapuglia Spa – is complementary to other existing regional initiatives such as RUPAR and the regional broadband network, the strengthening of the network will increase the degree of resilience and reliability of access to cloud services hosted in the Regional Data Center”. “ We improve the connection speed between the Policlinico and Giovanni XXIII by ten times with an advantage for the whole company ”, comments the general manager of the Bari Policlinico, Giovanni Migliore .“We are proud to have achieved this goal first in Italy and I want to thank all those who contributed: our ITC office and all the institutional and technological partners, for their commitment to promote innovation and the adoption of digital technologies in healthcare. Ultra-fast connectivity will help improve accessibility to electronic health services in our large hospital enterprise”, concludes Migliore.
